What are Mating Fasteners?
Barrel nuts, binder posts, and Chicago screws are all types of mating fasteners. A mating fastener consists of an internally-threaded, barrel-shaped body with a protruding flange, to which an externally-threaded mating bolt (most often a machine screw) is paired. The flange, or head, may feature slotted, Phillips, hex, or other drive options to assist with installation, or may be “plain” with a truss, dome, or flat surface.
The body of a mating fastener is inserted through one or more of the components being joined, while the head rests on the surface. The accompanying bolt/screw threads into the fastener itself and, when fully tightened, sits flush with the surface opposite the head. Binder posts, Chicago screws, and barrel nuts are usually chosen for their low profile.
