Limit?[edit]
A character slot may be used to create either a PvP-only character or a roleplaying character. Every account has 2 complimentary character slots. Each of the three campaigns adds 2 slots to the account. All slots have access to all campaigns added to the account. Additional character slots can be purchased in the Guild Wars Online. To everyone who purchased HoT a week ago, try getting in touch with support. I submitted a ticket and got this response. Hello, Thanks for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team. The Veteran Character Slots are sent to an account approximately after a week. In Guild Wars 2, you can create up to 5 Characters if you have bought any version of the game, or up to 2 if you are free to play. Additional character slots can be bought later in game. There are 5 races to choose from.
Do we know if there is a limit to character slots? --Lone Wolf 14:13, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- At least 13, according to this post. I've been wondering myself, I want to reach it eventually too :).

4 slots :D[edit]
I just bought one - actually it gives four (4) additional slots :-) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by89.246.209.151 (talk).
- That was a bug. You got lucky. Looks like you don't have to worry of losing the extra ones you got for free. Someone reported it to support, and they just told him to keep them and enjoy them. I'm not sure, but I think I got one for free too. MithTalk 01:15, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Lucky, just bought one and got one. 208.120.32.238 17:38, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Huh, I got 6 slots (not 4), both during one of the post-BWE3 stress tests (when I first bought the gems) and on the first day of headstart access. Since I never planned on having more than 8 characters (1/profession), 11 slots is more than enough for me. :D —Dr Ishmael 18:39, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- I' aiming towards 3 of each profession, to see all starting storylines. And well, you just have to make one Iron legion Charr and one Asura Dynamics engineer. And one Bear Norn and one Blood legion Charr warrior. And one street rat and one Ash legion thieves! You just have to do it! My next repeated will be a silvary night cycle necromancer, and finally a statics Asura, although I'm not sure about this one. Probably a guardian. MithTalk 15:07, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
There is No Limit[edit]
No limit to the number of character slots http://imgur.com/dDdOsQl --Blueblob0 00:43, 2 July 2013 (BST)
- Actually, there *is* a limit. No account can have more than 64 characters slots, total, as of October 2013. That could change in the future, of course, but as of this month, that's the number. -- Gaile 22:20, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Would a listing of sales be handy?[edit]
Maybe in the notes section, to help people that are thinking of getting additional slots but are unsure if a sale could be soon. Though ANet support would generally refund the difference if it was soon after a purchase could still be useful for the unsure folks. Aro 07:47, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not too sure if that would help too much on individual pages. For example, if we were to say that the price has historically gone down to 75% off, that does not tell the consumer what the next sale price will be, nor when it will happen. (Btw, pulled that number from nowhere.) An informed consumer is a wonderful thing, but sometimes information can be misleading.
- On the other hand, informing people that sales do occur is a great thing. In fact, Anet does that on their website. G R E E N E R 17:56, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
Does the Heart of Thorns expansion give additional character slots for free?[edit]
Similar to how buying each campaign in GW1 added 2 slots for free. (see the first bullet point under http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Character_slot#Acquisition) --1.9.154.198 07:38, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Only the deluxe and collector's addition give the additional character slot.--Relyk~talk < 07:46, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- First of all It's not for free, it costs €45!! - But yes, if you preorder your standard edition of HoT before Oct. 23rd you will get an additional character slot. - Manassas (talk) 08:12, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, this pre-purchase bonus character slot for the standard edition only applies if you registered the core game before January 23, 2015. --Cali (talk) 08:48, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Hmm only 1 additional character slot if you buy the Deluxe or Ultimate edition, or if you pre-order the Standard edition... That's such a bad deal compared to when Factions and Nightfall were released. --1.9.154.198 08:22, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Current maximum number of character slots[edit]
I changed the maximum number of character slots on April 1 from 70 to 69 based on this forum thread which states: 'Update to this issue, after about 20+ emails back and forth with Anet. Starting early this morning and they continued to work on it till 8 tonight. So about 12 hours. The maximum number of characters an account can have is 69. So wiki is incorrect. The assumption with the 70 on gw2efficiency is those accounts were updated to the site when the beta character was still in play or possible bug as suggested by Healix'
So, Blueblob0, if you changed it to 70 based on gw2efficiency, that information appears to be faulty. I'm going to revert it back to 69. If you (or anyone else) has more recent information that comes from Anet, please cite your source if you plan to change it to 70 again. --Cali (talk) 20:52, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry, I was reading the page and as i have 70 character slots (http://i.imgur.com/BX2pw0h.png), I thought I would change it to the correct info.--blueblob0 (talk) 15:16, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- Well, that's definitely a solid reason for making that edit. Blueblob0, do you remember how you acquired that 70th slot? And do you know how long you've had it? Trying to figure out how you have 70 characters when the person I quoted was unable to go past 69. --Cali (talk) 20:29, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- I think it was the free slot they gave everyone who got hot before a set date + the one for the Ultimate edition, otherwise I have kept up with max number of slots as new ones have been released so maybe there was a bug that let you get an extra one Blueblob0 (talk) 10:19, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks for the info. It does seem that a glitch occurred in your favor; I don't think the average account can currently reach 70 character slots. I'll add an anomaly note. --Cali (talk) 19:07, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
- Just bought 3 more slots today, and have now maxed out at 70. I have HoT and PoF. Is it possible the new standard is 70? Magua 18:26, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
70(71) slots with PoF[edit]
Can anyone confirm additional slot from purchasing PoF increased the maximum amount of characters? The F. Prince (talk) 17:40, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
According to gw2efficiency there are several accounts with 71 characters and even one account with 72 characters. Dinomannen (talk) 16:43, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
Late reply, but i can confirm Pre purchasing PoF gave an additional slot. Bringing the possible maximum number up to 71. I currently have 71 lvl 80 characters. GW2efficiency dose no show any at 72 that I can see.

Accounts are collections of characters associated with a single set of login credentials.
Account types[edit]
The original Buy-to-Play business model has since been modified by the introduction of totally free accounts (Play4Free), which include restrictions. You may see references to 4 different account types with varying access to content. Upgrading from P4F to other account types unlocks additional access and content. In order of decreasing access to content the different account types are:
- Full, unrestricted access to all content, free to play after one-time purchases of both Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire.
- Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire (expansion), unrestricted access to core game and Path of Fire content, free to play after one-time purchase, or Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns (expansion), unrestricted access to core game and Heart of Thorns content, free to play after one-time purchase.
- Guild Wars 2 (original), unrestricted access to core game, but no Heart of Thorns or Path of Fire features, free to play after purchase, no longer available for purchase from ArenaNet.
- Free Account, restricted access to core game, no expansion features, unlimited time, totally free.
- Trial Account, obsolete (no longer available), limited time access with restrictions similar to free accounts.
Creating an account[edit]
A new account is created when using a 25-character alphanumeric serial code (also known as an access key). The serial code can appear on the distribution media or sent digitally via email. The serial code is associated with an email address and password that are entered into the login screen. Free accounts do not require a serial code.
Support[edit]
- For account-related issues, players can create a support ticket or use the in-game support panel.
- If an account is compromised then an Account Restoration can be requested.
Upgrade[edit]
Guild Wars 2 Free To Play
A free account can currently be upgraded by purchasing the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion or the Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire expansion. Both include a new serial code. This serial code can be used to create a new account or upgrade an existing core or Play4Free account. Both expansions have 3 different editions: Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate. (See comparisons of the different editions for HoT and PoF). There is no discount available for those who purchased the original release (prior to August 2015), or the previous expansion(s), but you can buy Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire together. This bundle costs less than buying the two expansions separately.
There are three ways to purchase an upgrade: 1) via the Black Lion Trading Company; 2) by clicking the upgrade prompt always visible in the upper-left corner of free accounts, or 3) by make a purchase via the official website shop and then logging into the ArenaNet website to redeem the serial code.
Additionally, activation of a legacy 'Heroic Edition' serial code will upgrade an account and lift all free-to-play restrictions without granting any expansion access. Heroic Edition keys were the retail equivalent to the original Digital Deluxe Upgrade - their sale has been discontinued, but they are occasionally issued during special promotions and existing keys are still functional.
Characteristics[edit]
Many characteristics are associated with an account and shared by all characters on an account.
Home world[edit]
Each new account must select a home world as part of the initial setup. This selection is only relevant when accessing World versus World. Accounts can be transferred to a different world once every 7 days, if the new world is not full.
If there are no characters in the account then the transfer is free. Otherwise, there is a cost that is determined by the population of the new world. The account is logged out during the transfer process, which might take 5-30 minutes.
Initial resources[edit]
New (paid/fully unlocked) accounts receive the following:
- 5 character slots (initially empty) — additional character slots can be purchased from the Gem Store
- Account vault
- Bank (30-slot) — additional Bank Tab Expansions can be purchased from the Gem Store
- Material Storage (250 per item) — additional Storage Expanders can be purchased from the Gem Store
- Starting equipment, received following character creation, which includes armor, a weapon, and a 20-slot bag.
Items[edit]
- Account Bound items
- Items that are stored in the Account Vault
- Currency stored in the Wallet
Progress[edit]
- Achievements and titles
- PvP Rank and PvP Reward Tracks
Upgrades and unlocks[edit]
Player interactions[edit]
- Contacts are shared across the entire account.
- Mail sent by another player can be read and deleted by any character in the account. However, selected game-generated mail can only be read and deleted by one character.
- Guilds can be associated with an account. Each character can choose to represent a different one of five guilds. Only one character per account needs to be invited, since each will show up in the guild roster as a single member, however, each character must individually press the 'represent' button to enable their participation with that guild.
Limitations[edit]
Certain limitations apply to all accounts. Guild Wars 2 (original) accounts do not have access to Heart of Thorns (expansion) or Path of Fire (expansion) features. In particular, they are not able to use gliding, obtain any mount and unlock the mastery points in central Tyria. Additional limitations apply only to free accounts.
Character level requirement[edit]
Some content is restricted until at least one character on the account has reached the minimum level requirement, after which all characters in the account have access, regardless of level.
Cannot compose mail until level 6, but may receive mail.
- User interface
- Map completion icons on World Map - hidden until level 4.
- World versus World icon — hidden until level 18.
- Structured PvP icon — hidden until level 22.
These game modes can still be accessed through the asura gates in Lion's Arch or key binding the panels.
- Game mechanics
Hero challenges unlocked at level 11.
- Daily achievements
- 1 achievement per category — unlocked by default
- 3 achievements per category — unlocked at level 11
- 4 achievements per category — unlocked at level 31
Time requirement[edit]
Some content is restricted until sufficient real-world time has passed. Use the Chat command '/age' to display: the number of days since account creation, the number of hours played by all characters and the number of hours played by the current character.
- Three day
There is a 72-hour restriction on:
- Currency Exchange in the Gem store after account creation to combat botting and scams.
- All deposits and withdrawals to the Guild Vault after joining a guild. The time remaining is shown on the Guild Vault display and the entire vault is 'grayed out'. This timer is reset if you leave and rejoin a guild. It is not affected by either Guild Rank or Vault permissions.
- Five day
The trading post limits (ability to buy or sell certain items) is removed 5 days after purchasing an expansion.
- Seven day
There is a restriction of 500 per week on the total amount any account may receive from a Guild Vault or via in-game mail. If this is exceeded using the Guild Vault then the 'withdraw' button is 'greyed out'. If exceeded using in-game mail then when you hover over the 'Take All' button', you may see:
This would exceed the value allowed to be received by this account this week. Each account can only receive 5,000,000 coins per week through in-game mail or the Guild Vault. Please wait and try again later.
— In-game message
- First month
The first 30 days following creation, a new account is limited as follows:
- Amount of coin that can be mailed. However, any amount can be received.
- Value of items both deposited into and withdrawn from a Guild Vault.
The amount you are allowed increases approximately one gold every 10 hours. When this amount is exceeded, the error message that appears is:
Guild Wars 2 Extra Character Slots
This transfer would exceed the total value of transfers allowed for new accounts. As you continue to play, your account will be allowed to transfer higher values. New account limits are necessary to protect your online experience from fraud and illegal trading. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience.
— In-game message
- An unlimited amount of items that have no assigned value can be transferred by new accounts regardless of their price on the Trading Post.
- Multiple small amounts of gold can be transferred by new accounts even though equivalent large, single transfers are blocked.
Free accounts[edit]
Free accounts have a number of additional restrictions placed on them, with the intent of preventing malicious persons from using them to disrupt the game and to encourage purchase of the game.
- Initial character slots (2). The other 3 of 5 initial slots are locked.
- Bag slots per character (3): 20 Slot Starter Bag plus 2 expansion slots, initially empty.
- In-game mail limited to mutual friends; prohibits sending coin and items, but they can both be received.
- Guild hall features: Guild Vault, Guild Enhancements and Guild Portal are unavailable, but full access to all other guild features.
- Login rewards unavailable
- Gem Store limited to items usable by free accounts
- Currency Exchange — gems to gold exchange available, gold to gems exchange unavailable

Character level requirement[edit]
- Maps and Content — starter maps only until character level 10; Lion's Arch unlocked at character level 35.
- In-game message is: 'You must be level 35 to enter this area. You can open your map by pressing M and travel to other starting zones. Upgrade your account by purchasing Path of Fire to access this area immediately.'
- There is one waypoint in every starting area automatically available for transport before level 35.
- PvP unlocked at level 3.
- Looking For Group unlocked at character level 30
- World versus World unlocked at character level 60

- Squad chat unlocked at character level 30.
- PvP chat:
- team chat available
- PvP Lobby chat unlocked at PvP Rank 20
- emotes, map chat, and say chat disabled during matches
Trading Post[edit]
Trading Post is limited, either for buying or selling, to items from a selected list, which are as follows:
- fine, masterwork, rare and exotic crafted armor, crafted weapons (including Primordus weapons) and trinkets, but only:
- Single attribute: Mighty, Precise, Resilient, Vital, Malign, Healing
